These documents, dating from 1235 and 1242, offer a unique insight into the inner workings of a legal system far removed from our own. They were written by the justiciars, or traveling judges, who traveled throughout the bishopric of Durham administering justice. As one of the most important ecclesiastical jurisdictions outside London at that time, Durham had its own independent system, headed by the Bishop. Consequently, the criminal rolls presented here are some of the most significant criminal records to survive from the period, exceeding even those of royal courts in their detail, offering a distinct contribution to the study of legal procedure and social history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

Explore medieval law and local power in the Bishopric of Durham through the pages of Miscellanea, Vol. 2. This volume presents printed rolls and documentary material that illuminate how the bishop’s courts evolved from seignorial to royal‑style processes, and how disputes over jurisdiction, feudal rights, and revenue were handled in the 13th century.
Delve into the practical details of the era: the long governance of Sadberge, the fight over the bishop’s jura regalia, and the shifting arrangements that tied church and crown to a single franchise. The volume also offers context on the roles of judges, stewards, and other officials, and it discusses the early forms of the bishopric’s eyre and its relation to royal procedure.
Ideal for readers of medieval legal history, church‑state relations, and the administration of English palatinates.
