"The Misbehaviorists, Pseudo-Science and the Modern Temper" is a sharp-witted and provocative critique of the behavioral psychology and scientific skepticism that gained prominence in the early 20th century. Written during a period of rapid intellectual shift, Harvey Wickham takes aim at the influential thinkers of his era, including John B. Watson, Sigmund Freud, and Albert Edward Wiggam. Through a blend of humor, irony, and philosophical rigor, Wickham examines the modern temper and its tendency to reduce complex human experience to mere biological or mechanistic functions.

The work challenges the notion that traditional morality and human agency have been rendered obsolete by the new sciences of the day. Wickham argues that much of what is presented as objective, empirical truth is actually a form of pseudo-science that ignores the deeper realities of the human spirit. By dissecting the popular theories of the 1920s, the author provides a spirited defense of common sense and humanism against the rising tide of scientific determinism. "The Misbehaviorists, Pseudo-Science and the Modern Temper" serves as a significant historical document, capturing the intellectual backlash against materialism and providing a fascinating look at the development of psychological thought and its impact on modern society.
