Pioche, Nevada was one of the state's most important silver mining towns and was known as one of the roughest towns in the Old West. Almost 60 percent of the homicides recorded in Nevada from 1871-72 took place in Pioche, and it is rumored that 72 men were killed in gunfights before the town saw its first natural death. These newspapers have a wealth of contemporary local mining content, and lively and entertaining news from the wider US. One issue, for example, announces the excommunication of members of the Molly Maguires secret society from an Irish Catholic Church in Pennsylvania. AAS holds 68 issues from 1876, none from 1875. Several Nevada institutions hold at least some issues from 1875. The Pioche Daily Journal ran from Dec. 15, 1874, to June 7, 1876. A complete list of issues can be provided upon request.
