"The Mind of the Spectator Under the Editorship of Addison & Steele" offers a profound examination of the intellectual and cultural impact of the landmark 18th-century periodical. Compiled and analyzed by George Sidney Streatfeild, this work synthesizes the core themes, moral philosophy, and social observations that defined the collaboration between Joseph Addison and Richard Steele.

The book explores the distinct voice of "The Spectator," a publication that fundamentally reshaped English literature and journalism. By organizing the thoughts of the original editors, Streatfeild highlights their mission to reform public manners and provide insightful commentary on the daily life of London. Readers will find deep dives into the character sketches, such as the famous Sir Roger de Coverley, and the philosophical inquiries that sought to bridge the gap between scholarly thought and the general public.

This volume is an essential resource for those interested in the Augustan Age of literature. It provides a structured look at the development of the periodical essay and the rise of the coffee-house culture that fueled intellectual exchange in the 1700s. "The Mind of the Spectator Under the Editorship of Addison & Steele" remains a valuable scholarly companion for understanding the origins of modern social criticism and the enduring legacy of two of England's greatest essayists.
