Item description from seller

A collection of seven mimeographed issues of *The Base A Star* from 1944. 30pp. Two of the issues featured here are incomplete, August 12, 1944 and October 1, 1944. Very good or better with some creasing and tiny tears. *The Base A Star* was created by Malcolm Forbes while serving with Base A in Papua New Guinea during World War II. According to a retrospective article by Michele Moleny, "it was a one-man operation, published daily, and read by thousands of troops at the Headquarters Division." She continues, "Forbes, a young corporal, gathered the news, wrote it, laid out the paper [and] mimeographed it." The issues featured here are mostly from August of 1944 and are roughly 4 pages. In them he discusses everything from the goings on in the war to more light hearted topics such as sports. The August 8th issue features a headline which reads, "Drive Toward Paris"; on the 12th the front page reads, "Nazis are Squeezed;" the 13th includes a headline, "Iwo Jima is Bombed." Accompanying his paper editions, Forbes had a broadcast news program which was part of the "Mosquito Net" group of radio stations in the Pacific. After the war Forbes earned and English degree and became a teacher. An interesting collection of U.S. Army newspapers created by a single Corporal in World War II.…
