[Women in Sciences] Mildred Cohn. Original copy of PhD dissertation. Oxygen Exchange Reactions Between Organic Compounds and Water; Kinetics of the Acetone-Water Exchange Reaction. New York: Columbia University, 1938. 687 pages. Throughout her career, Mildren Cohn overcame gender prejudice to leave a profound impact on biochemistry and biophysics. In 1982, Cohn was awarded the National Medal of Science, the nation's top recognition for work in science; 50 years earlier, however, Cohn almost dropped out of the Chemistry PhD program at Columbia. Because she was a woman, she was barred from teaching assistant positions (awarded only to men) and struggled to save for tuition payments. As Cohn recalled looking back upon her life's work: "My career has been affected at every stage by the fact that I am a woman, beginning with my undergraduate education." Very rare copy of the pioneering scientist's graduate dissertation, supervised by Harold Urey, 1934 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry. Very good condition.
