Synopsis:

East Asia has had the world's highest rate of economic growth since 1986. Migration has become a central question in regional debates on international economic relations which, until now, have focused mainly on trade and capital movements. The concerns raised by international migration in Asia resemble those of many OECD countries: to monitor and adequately control migration, combat illegal migration, manage migration flows in accordance with both labour market requirements and the ability to absorb foreign workers, and accord greater emphasis to the migration of temporary and skilled labour. This study analyzes major structural changes in the labour markets of several Asian countries and their impact on the scale, nature and direction of migration flows.
