Midwest Modern: The Color Woodcuts of Mabel Hewit is the first book showcasing the work of an important modernist printmaker. An Ohio artist, Hewit (1903-1984), who came of age in the 1920s, was well aware of European modernism and other contemporary trends and worked in both representational and abstract styles. A printmaker of distinction, Hewit's inventive woodcuts of real life scenes and subjects describe the world in joyful color with an immediacy that belie their small size. Early in her career she learned the white-line color woodcut technique from its most famous practitioner, Blanche Lazzell. She explored and perfected this technique for the rest of her professional life. Her subject matter reflects local Ohio scenery, visits to Provincetown, the environs of the Summer School of Painting (Ox-Bow) in Saugatuck, Michigan, and travels to Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean. This collection-featuring more than 100 color images-coincides with the Cleveland Museum of Art exhibition on display through October 24, 2010.

About the Author

Jane Glaubinger is curator of prints at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Over the 35 years she has been at the museum, Glaubinger has organized more than 60 exhibitions, enhanced the museum’s collection of prints, and lectured widely. Among her publications are Modern Masterworks on Paper from the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Paper Now: Bent, Molded, and Manipulated; and Dorothy Dehner: Drawings, Prints, Sculpture.

You have the right to cancel this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The cancellation period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right to cancel, you must inform us, Zed Books, 281 Flatbush Ave #3D, 11217, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A., 1 3473024781, of your decision to cancel this contract by a clear statement (e.g. a letter sent by post, fax or e-mail). You may use the attached model cancellation form, but it is not obligatory. You can also electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". If you use this option, we will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a cancellation on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the cancellation deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right to cancel before the cancellation period has expired.

Effects of cancellation

If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to cancel with contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to us or Zed Books, PO Box 380484, 11238, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A., 1 3473024781, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your cancellation from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of cancellation

The right of cancellation does not apply to:

the delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
the supply of digital content (including ebooks) which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not cancel it once delivery had started.

Shipping Terms

All domestic orders ship within 2 business days. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LBs, or 1 KG. If your order is heavy or oversized, I may contact you to let you know that extra shipping will be required, particularly if you request priority shipping. I ship through the U.S. Post Office. For domestic orders, I typically purchase insurance for books valued $100 and over.

For most international orders, I use USPS priority international or first class international mail. In order to qualify for the advertised rates, a book must fit into a standard size priority envelope which is about 9" x 12" or 23cm x 30cm--the thicker the book, the less likely to fit. If the book will not fit inside the international priority envelope, it will have to be shipped via first class international or priority which is typically more expensive. Shipping time for international orders is usually 6-10 days, not including custom delays.

All books are shipped in cardboard boxes with bubble wrap inside. As mentioned above, domestic priority and priority international shipments may require the book to be shipped in a USPS priority envelope which is less sturdy than a cardboard box. Customers ordering priority or priority international are welcome to contact me prior to ordering the book in order to inquire about the possibility or added costs of shipping in a cardboard box rather than the USPS flat rate envelope.
