Item description from seller

Undated hardcover in pine green cloth covered boards with bumped spine ends and sharp tips. Black titles on cover/spine. Book has a forward lean and a 1944 gift dedication on fep. This uncommon edition of this story is a former library copy that has some erasures on a few pages where library stamped their name over the text. There is some partial loss of text but one can still follow along for most of it (see images). Part of the Hutchinson's Wildlife Series. It includes it's original color illustrated dust wrapper (un-clipped, 6/- net price). No pocket or evidence of having had one, all pages present. Library stamp at head of page block. Midnight was a colt who was born wild and never tamed. His mother, Lady Ebony, belonged to Major Howard and when she ran away from her mountain pasture to join the band of wild mares which the chestnut stallion was leading, she did not know that her going was to result in tragedy for her best friend, the old squatter, Sam, who was suspected by Major Howard of having stolen her. Next spring, when Lady Ebony and her colt, Midnight returned to the upper meadow, they were truly as wild as the bobcats, cougars, hawks and owls who were part of their world. Midnight learned many things from his mother, and when, in the bitter winter that followed that first summer, they were attacked by a wolfpack, he learned the greatest lesson of all - that a wild mother will sacrifice herself for her own young . Lady Ebony died - and Midnight was left alone. An accident, and Midnight himself, without being aware of it, gives Major Howard the idea that old Sam did not steal Lady Ebony after all and makes a convincing conclusion to this stirring tale of a wild horse.…
