Sneak Peek
We mortals, men and women, devour many a disappointment between breakfast and dinner-time; keep back the tears and look a little pale about the lips, and in answer to inquiries say, “Oh, nothing!” Pride helps us; and pride is not a bad thing when it only urges us to hide our own hurts—not to hurt others.
Synopsis
George Eliot’s classic book Middlemarch is a Victorian era novel that is a historical fiction. When the brilliant lady Dorothea marries the pompous professor Edward Casaubon she commits a catastrophic mistake. The tyrannical Casaubon is envious when she meets his idealistic cousin Will Ladislaw. He forbids Ladislaw from coming to see him anymore. Since he believes that his cousin will attempt to court Dorothea after his death. According to his will Dorothea will not inherit from his estate if she marries Ladislaw.
Meanwhile the story of Lydgate a young, modern physician who is passionate about both medicine and research takes place. He finds the "polished, refined, [and] docile" woman he has been searching for in a spouse in Middlemarch, Rosamond Vincy. Rosamond thinks her social status would rise by marrying Lydgate, even though she is ignorant that he is impoverished. Rosamond's extravagant way of living, together with her naive and disinterest in his career, push her husband almost into bankruptcy. Suspicious circumstances surround the death of one of Dr. Lydgate's patients forcing him to change his plans.
