Paperback. A literary eventthe long-awaited novel, almost two decades in work, by the acclaimed author of The Tunnel.Middle C takes its place in that great line of modern novels about inauthenticity. . . . However, there is nothing sham to Gasss art: Its not just dazzling, its the real thing. The Washington PostMiddle C follows Joseph Skizzen, who as a child flees Nazi-era Austria with his family, only to lose his father under mysterious circumstances in wartime London. Resettled in small-town Ohio, Joseph grows into a quiet, unremarkable man on the surface: a piano player, a teacher, a son left behind. But beneath that life, he constructs another identity, one obsessed with humanitys darkest crimes and a strange personal project he calls the Inhumanity Museum. As memory, imagination, and reality blur, Joseph begins to question who he truly is, and whether any version of the self can be innocent.Spanning from World War II Europe to postwar America, William Gass weaves a daring, inventive narrative that blends music, philosophy, and language into a powerful exploration of identity, morality, and the stories we tell ourselves.Middle C is a bold, unconventional novel that challenges traditional storytelling while delivering a deeply human portrait of guilt and self-creation.From one of Americas most celebrated literary voices, this is a work of rare ambition, haunting, intricate, and unforgettable. In a series of brilliant variations, William Gass presents a man's life--futile, comic, anarchic--arranged in an array of vocabularies, altered rhythms, forms, and tones, with music as both theme and structure.
It begins in Graz, Austria, in 1938, when Joseph Skizzen's father pretends to be Jewish and emigrates to avoid the Nazis. In London with his wife and children for the duration of the war, he mysteriously disappears and the rest of the family relocates to a small town in Ohio. Here Joseph Skizzen grows up and leads a resolutely ordinary life, but one that is built on a scaffold of forgery and deceit. Outwardly he is a professor of music at a mediocre college; secretly he is the earnestly obsessive curator of a private Inhumanity Museum, meant to contain the guilt of centuries of atrocities. Middle C tells the story of his journey--a story that is also an investigation into the nature of identity and the ways in which each of us is several selves.
