A later edition of this authoritative work on microscopes, including insights on the instrument and what can be found, with numerous colour plates. The fifteenth edition of The Microscope: Its History, Construction, and Application, Being a Familiar Introduction to the Use of the Instrument, and the Study of Microscopical Science, written by opthalmic surgeon Jabez Hogg. Published in 1911, first published in 1854. In the publisher's original red cloth, with a frontispiece, and all twenty plates, including eleven in colour, by various illustrators including prolific engraver of science books Tuffen West. Collated complete. An authoritative work on microscopes, Hogg later became the honorary secretary of the Royal Microscopical Society in 1867 and the first president of the Medical Microscopical Society. Hogg was also famous for being in the earliest known photograph of a photographer at work. In the publisher's original red cloth. Externally, mostly smart, with the odd handling mark and slight rubbing to joints and edges. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Offsetting to free end papers, and the odd faint spot to pastedowns. Previous owner's bookplate and booksellers stamp to front pastedown, minor wear to rear end paper hinge. Internally, firmly bound.
