Mickey Baker's Complete Course in Jazz Guitar Book 1 is one of the most respected jazz guitar method books ever published, offering a practical and direct approach to learning jazz harmony, rhythm, and improvisation on the guitar. Written by influential guitarist and teacher Mickey Baker, this instructional book presents a structured pathway into the sound and language of jazz guitar through progressive chord studies, harmonic concepts, and rhythm techniques. Designed for guitarists ready to move beyond basic chord playing, it introduces the essential foundations of jazz accompaniment and melodic phrasing while remaining accessible to motivated beginners.
Across 64 pages, the course guides players step by step through a carefully organised series of jazz chord forms and harmonic devices that form the foundation of modern jazz guitar playing. Each lesson explores practical musical applications, including chord progressions, rhythm and blues influenced phrases, guitar riffs, fill-ins, breaks, and solo ideas that help players understand how chords function within real musical contexts. The notation format is clear and easy to follow, allowing students to focus on building hand coordination, chord fluency, and rhythmic confidence while developing a deeper understanding of jazz harmony.
What makes this classic guitar method especially valuable is its emphasis on musical vocabulary rather than isolated exercises.
Song List
This instructional method book focuses on progressive jazz chord studies and technique exercises rather than individual songs.
Ideal for daily study, teaching environments, and long-term skill development, this course continues to inspire guitarists who want to understand the language of jazz guitar and build confidence across chords, rhythm playing, and improvisational ideas.
