Item description from seller

Fabulous poster presented to the Watson Grange from the Michigan State Grange, dated to 1904. Poster backed on board; "State Grange of Michigan" seal affixed to poster near bottom edge; measures 24" x 36"; no content on verso. Light wear to all edges; two 1" tears in margins, not affecting content; colors are vibrant. The poster depicts members of the Grange in session, gathered in a grand meeting house with the ladies of "Libertas" and "Justicia" looking on, and surrounded by illustrations filled with pastoral allegory. The letters "P of H" are illustrated near the top edge of the poster, referring to the order's full title, the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry. The Grange is the nation's oldest national agricultural organization, formed in the years following the American Civil War to unite private citizens in improving the economic and social position of the country's farm population. "The first effort to establish a grange in Watson was made in 1874, which soon after resulted in a prosperous organization, its first officers having been John F. Beebe, Master; B. C. Palmer, Overseer; William Kent, Steward; Joseph Miner, Chaplain ; J. B. Alexander, Sec.; James W. Kent, Treas." (History of Allegan and Barry Counties, Michigan, 1880). This attractive poster was presented to the Watson Grange, No. 154 as a reward for increased membership.…
