Print on Demand. This book tackles a heated debate within early 19th century Methodism: the nature and expression of religious feeling. The author, a devout Methodist, takes issue with the growing trend of emotional outbursts, particularly shouting, leaping, and dancing, which he believes detracts from the true essence of Christian piety. Drawing upon scripture and the writings of prominent Methodist thinkers like John and Charles Wesley, the author argues that these exuberant displays are not sanctioned by the Bible nor the teachings of the church's founders. He contends that such expressions are often driven by a superficial understanding of faith, and can even be manipulated by Satan to discredit true religious devotion. The author, however, does not dismiss the legitimacy of heartfelt emotional responses to spiritual experiences. He believes these are important but argues that they should be expressed with decorum and restraint, as exemplified by the early Christians and the teachings of the apostle Paul. This book delves into the complexities of religious fervor, offering a thought-provoking perspective on the balance between genuine faith and its outward manifestation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

He has endeavoured so to write as that no sober minded and candid christian may condemn him. He is sure he feels nothing contrary to love and charity, and he has a fond persuasion, that even many of those who have been honestly misled, will not be offended at the manner of his arguments, drawn as they are from scripture and reason, with the laudable motive of bringing them back into the sober path of good old Wesleyan jliethodism.
He entreats all those who are interested in the sub Ject matter of this work, to give it their candid atten tion. If you love truth, fear not'to try it. Truth must bear the strictest scrutiny. Andi alteram partem, (hear both sides) is a wise maxim conse crated by experience. Mark how our church has already sanctioned this sentiment It is desir ed, says the resolution of the first Methodist con ference which ever met,' (in 17444) '6 that we meet as little children who have every thing to learn; that every point may be, examined to the founda tion. Need we fear this? Of overturning our first principles? flay? If they are false the sooner they are overturned the better: If they are true, they will bear the strictest examination. Let us all then pray for a willingness to receive light, to know of every doctrine Whether it be of God. May we their children, neglect rules of action, so sound as these!
