Print on Demand. This book introduces a method to gain valuable information from limited or fragmented topside ionogram data. It makes use of a model ionosphere composed of a series of adjustable parameters, including the height of maximum electron density, the ratio of electron concentration, and the temperature. The method requires more computer time but uses data more efficiently than conventional methods. Through a series of sample inputs, using either observed points from an ionogram or a calculated profile, the book demonstrates the method's ability to determine ionospheric parameters with both uniqueness and acceptable accuracy. The ionosphere is a crucial part of understanding how Earth's atmosphere interacts with the sun's radiation and particles. This book provides a new way to gain key parameters of the ionosphere that are not readily available through conventional methods. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Modern attempts at elaboration lie between two limiting types of approach. One of these, the polynomial approach, involves the use of a polynomial of high order to represent the entire ionosphere [titheridge, The other, the lamination method [budden, involves a large number of slabs, each of which is assumed.to have a linear variation of plasma frequency. Between these two extremes there exists many lamination methods which involve the use of non-linear slabs.
