Item description from seller

pp. 255-271. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Lightly rubbed, somewhat dog-eared, author's name, place and date of publication handwritten on the cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: Looking through the vast modern bibliography (Shibies 1970, van Noppen et al. 1985, van Noppen and Hols 1990) on what Genette (1972: 32) has called 'un des rares termes survivant du grand naufrage de la rhétorique', one notices that some attention has been devoted to the translation of metaphor (Dagut 1976, Newmark 1985), but very little to the metaphor of translation. The aim of this paper is to consider the metaphors used by Elizabethan translators to describe the functions and processes of translation within the context of the Renaissance adherence to ideas about language from Classical Antiquity, at the same time examining the problem of whether Renaissance England did make any substantial contribution to translation theory. We shall take a brief look at the latter question first. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.…
