Item description from seller

First edition in English. Octavo (194mm.) Pp. [5] v i- xx, [1] 2 - 284. With a half title. Uncut. Contents clean and bright. Publisher's light terracotta cloth backed boards, the covers decorated in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Glazed yellow endpapers. Overall, a very good plus copy. Jean Louis Armand de Quatrefages de Bréau (1810 – 1892) was a French physician, anthropologist and zoologist. He was highly critical of the theories of Charles Darwin, but he was not anti-evolution. His views were almost diametrically opposed to those of Darwin, they exchanged many strong letters but remained on friendly terms.
