About this Item
Original hand-colored engraving. Engraved image has a plate line, but no watermark on the paper. This is a caricature by James Gillray depicting a seated man in great pain having a tooth extracted by a seemingly unconcerned practitioner. This is clearly a parody of some sort, with a paper entitled "The True Briton" on a table in front of the patient, though the context of the humor is largely lost now. Published by John Miller, Bridge Street, London & W. Blackwood, Edinburgh. This contemporary hand-coloured caricature, is from the collection of Gillray's works issued under the publisher's imprint John Miller, slightly smaller than the 1808 original, but the colouring is period and NOT modern.
