Item description from seller

8vo., (9 x 5 5/8 inches). Original brown cloth, gilt (edges frayed, covers worn with loss). Provenance: from the library of Amiel Weeks Whipple (1818 - 1863), his sale Doyle New York, 5th November 2012, lot 98 Part I only. Including newly defeated President Pierce's State of the Union address delivered on the 2nd of December 1856, in which he a discusses the first rumblings of Civil War and the violence that had erupted in the territory of Kansas: "Then followed the cry of alarm from the North against imputed Southern encroachments, which cry sprang in reality from the spirit of revolutionary attack on the domestic institutions of the South, and, after a troubled existence of a few months, has been rebuked by the voice of a patriotic people. Revolutionary disorder in Kansas had its origin in projects of intervention deliberately arranged by certain members of that Congress which enacted the law for the organization of the Territory; and when propagandist colonization of Kansas had thus been undertaken in one section of the Union for the systematic promotion of its peculiar views of policy there ensued as a matter of course a counteraction with opposite views in other sections of the Union" (page 12). This volume also includes the wide-ranging "Report of the Secretary of the Interior" by R. McClelland.…
