Paperback. In this captivating memoir, Jack Ratliff's journey takes him from the "bitterweed" country of small-town West Texas to the high-stakes courtrooms of El Paso. Along the way, he navigates poolroom scams, drives a small-town hearse, witnesses the "performance of the century" by a fake British director, and learns how his father-in-law outmaneuvered a corrupt political "Duke" in South Texas. Gritty, funny, and unsentimental, this book-the prequel and sequel to Riding the White Bull-offers a vivid look at the "rough justice" of a quintessential Texas life and the enduring wisdom of a man who learned how to run the table.
