About the Author: JOHN SMAIL is Associate Professor of History, University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is the author of The Origins of Middle-Class Culture: Halifax, Yorkshire 1660-1780 , and has published articles on aspects of the English wool textile industry and early industrialization.
