Merchant Ivory's English Landscape is the first book to examine in detail four widely acclaimed English films - A Room with a View, Maurice, Howards End and The Remains of the Day - the result of the unique collaboration of more than thirty years of American director James Ivory, Indian producer Ismail Merchant, and German-born scriptwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala.
In Merchant Ivory's English Landscape author John Pym's engaging text gives a refreshing account of Merchant Ivory's four recent English movies (and some of the partnership's earlier works as well), taking the reader behind the scenes of the making of the films, revealing how aspects of the English people and culture were researched and portrayed, locations chosen, and scenes executed. Nearly 100 superb film stills and production shots - most reproduced in color and never before seen - re-create the quintessential flavor and sense of place of Merchant Ivory's films. Intermingled with scenes of England's timeless landscapes and gardens, grand country houses, cityscapes, and views of Oxford and Cambridge are more intimate scenes, detailed interiors, and close-ups of the actors.
