Description: Nineteenth-century American textbook on psychology and philosophy by Joseph Haven, formerly Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy at Amherst College. Haven divides mental activity into the intellect, sensibilities, and will, treating perception, memory, imagination, reasoning, emotion, volition, dreams, somnambulism, insanity, and related aspects of the human mind. Originally published in 1857, Mental Philosophy became an influential American college text during the formative period of psychology as a distinct discipline. This copy is the 1867 Gould and Lincoln printing, as stated on the title page. Bibliographic sources confirm an 1867 Gould and Lincoln edition as well as earlier printings of the work. An interesting association with the international history of psychology: Haven’s work was later translated in Japan by Nishi Amane and played a role in the early introduction of Western psychology there. Detailed Condition: Good condition. Later brown library-style cloth/buckram binding with gilt title and author to spine. Binding is sturdy with light rubbing and wear. Text block is age-toned with scattered foxing and spotting. Title page and adjacent leaves show old moisture staining/tide marks, particularly along the upper and outer margins. Additional age-related discoloration and occasional spotting throughout. No dust jacket. Despite the staining, the volume remains a solid usable copy of this 1867 printing. Please see photographs for condition details. Shipping / Returns: Carefully packed and shipped with tracking. Thirty-day returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks policies. PSYCH 2a.…
