Ailbhe has spent her whole life being watched for who she comes from, not who she is. Granddaughter of the elf whose long-ago mistake fractured Clover Hollow's guardians, she has learned it is safer to disappear into her family's shadow than to be truly seen.
When the council assigns her to ward-craft duty beside Brigid, the human girl the hollow chose to claim as its own, and to recording the eldest elf's fading memory of the rupture before it is lost for good, Ailbhe expects more of the same careful distance. Instead she finds an opinionated terrier who adores her on sight, a cup of tea that keeps arriving with nothing attached to it, and a talent in her own two hands she has spent years pretending not to have.
The wards are fraying. The old divisions have never healed. And the hollow is about to need exactly the person Ailbhe has always been too afraid to become.
A cozy fantasy of inherited magic, small-village belonging, and found family, perfect for fans of Katherine Addison, Heather Fawcett, and T. Kingfisher.
