Van Riper chronicles the Victorian debate over the idea of prehistoric human origins within the context of Victorian science, showing how the notion of human antiquity forced Victorians to redefine their assumptions about human evolution and the relationship of science to Christianity.

From the Author
The discovery of human artifacts among the bones of extinct animals changed the way geologists understood the last parts of Earth history. It changed the way archaeologists thought about the first parts of human history. It changed the way anthropologists thought about the origins of the human race. Most of all, it changed the ways in which those three scientific disciplines interacted with each other. In doing so, it created the foundations of the multi-disciplinary approach to prehistory that we now take for granted.
This book looks at those changes as they unfolded in Britain between the 1850s and the late 1870s, in the midst of arguments about the truthfulness of the Bible and about Darwin's theory of evolution. Conservative commentators saw the three related controversies as signs that their value system was under siege. Progressives saw them as a signs of science's triumph over blind tradition. Scientists weighed in on both sides, in a debate waged in full public view.
I wrote this book as part of an effort to understand why we think about human prehistory the way we do--and why *what* we think about it seems to matter so much to so many people outside the scientific community.
