Pages clean save for foxing and pale pencil ghosting at preliminaries, foxing scattered throughout and along page block edges, and a page of lightly penciled notes on the reverse of the final free endpaper; the binding is relaxed, hinges starting and a few signatures beginning to loosen, the brown cloth cover showing fabric tears and edgewear at spine ends and corners and a small scuff at the lower rear, but otherwise attractive, the gilt titles and decoration still bright. 859pp. Louis Pasteur receives an entry, as do HRH Victoria and Frederick Douglass, but Isaac Newton is absent; Mill, but no Locke or Hume; Charles Reade, but no Wordsworth.
