Print on Demand. This book explores the lives and legacies of George R. Mather, a minister and dedicated promoter of the life and literary works of Robert Burns. The book also delves into the remarkable stories of William and John Hunter, whose pioneering work in surgery and medicine is widely acknowledged as having saved countless lives. As the sons of a farmer in East Kilbride, the Hunters' achievements underscore the rich, albeit often-forgotten, history of Scottish contributions to science, a debt owed by all those who have benefited from modern medicine and biology. Despite their profound impact on their respective fields, these men's stories had gradually faded from public memory. Mather set out to rectify this oversight and re-introduce these men and their invaluable contributions to Scottish history. Beyond the biographies themselves, this illuminating volume examines the complex relationship between Burns, the national poet, and his fellow countrymen. This thought-provoking work concludes with a call action to create lasting memorials to these pioneering figures, not only to honor their memories but also to inspire future generations to pursue excellence and service in their chosen fields. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The Children of Caledonia are, as a' rule, not behind in commemorating the mighty dead of their country, and it is a matter much to be regretted that whilst London and Oxford have each a memorial of the Hunters, Glasgow and Lanarkshire have raised no statue in their honour. 1by some it may be said that such men need no monument; that tributes of this kind may be required by men whose Chief eminence has been the amassing 'of wealth, or by men of superficial popularity, but that in the case of the Hunters any such thing is superfluous. The obvious and sufficient answer to any such argument is that when Dr. Mather's book appeared the memory of these men was, amongst their own countrymen, the property of the few; the many had forgotten them altogether.
Had Dr. Mather lived, an appeal would have been made for the funds necessary to erect statues Of the Hunters to be placed somewhere in Glasgow. On this he had Set his heart; and, by his death.
