Item description from seller

203 x 133 mm; lacking wrappers, or issued without these; pp. 40; pin-holes from original stitching evident; removed from a tract volume; housed in film-fronted bag. Very good condition. (The Settlers' Press, pp. 44, 69; SABIB I, p. 497) OCLC finds just the Yale University copy; SABIB I lists four South African repositories. "In 1873 [Templeton] was appointed headmaster of the Grahamstown boys' public school, many of his best boys following him. Under his capable administration the school expanded rapidly, the roll increasing from seventy to 200, matriculation classes being instituted and provision being made for the intermediate B.A. examination. Ten years after the death of his first wife, Templeton married the widow of George William Impey in January 1886. Losing his way a week later, while walking with his wife in the Addo bush, he collapsed and died of heart failure. He was buried in the Grahamstown cemetery. Templeton was an outstanding teacher who enjoyed a great reputation as a headmaster and made a significant contribution to education in the Cape Colony, among his most eminent pupils being W. P. Schreiner, James Rose Innes, Richard Solomon, William H. Solomon and Emily Solomon." - DSAB I, p. 786. John Aitken Chalmers, author of this address, was a childhood companion of the Xhosa missionary Tiyo Soga. His life of Soga (Edinburgh, 1877) was one of the first full-length biographies of any South African. (DSAB I, p. 163).
