The scarce complete five volume second English language translation of Pierre-Mathurin of L'Écluse des Loges memoirs of Maximilien de Béthune, 1st Duke of Sully.Sully was a nobleman, soldier and statesman, who served as Prime Minister under King Henry VI of France.Originally published in French in 1638, the first edition in English appeared over a century later, in a three volume 1756 edition.Including an account of the trial of Ravaillac for the murder of Henry the Great.While the title pages offer popular novelist Charlotte Lennox, the author of 'The Female Quixote', as the translator, the ESTC suggest that this may have actually been the work of Samuel Johnson, an associate of Lennox.ESTC reference number T143316With the stamp of Cornwell House to the front free endpaper or a front blank of each volume.
