230pp. With an engraved frontispiece and an additional engraved title page. Contemporary green morocco, stamped in gilt and blind, A.E.G. A trifle rubbed. Near contemporary school prize inscription to FFEP, ownership inscription of Rebecca L. Cooper to front blank fly-leaf, frontispiece and additional title browned. A missionary memoir, first published in 1848, here issued as a part of Thomas Nelson's 'Christian Female Biography' series, of American Baptist Sarah Boardman Judson [nĂ e Hall] (1803-1845). In 1824, Judson sailed to Burma (Myanmar) with her first husband, George Boardman, and there established numerous mission schools whilst proselytising to the native Karen people. She published a Burmese translation of The Pilgrim's Progress and a Peguan translation of the New Testament. Her biographer, American poet Emily Chubbuck (1817-1854), writing under her nom de plume Fanny Forester, would go on to marry Sarah's second husband Adoniram Judson (1788-1850). Size: 12mo.
