Ellis was an historian, biographer, Professor of Systematic Theology at Harvard. He had been a classmate of Theodore Parker and John Sullivan Dwight at the Harvard Divinity School. This memoir prints extensive extracts from an unpublished journal kept by Ellis on a trip to Europe in 1838. He visited Carlyle twice - they discussed the late Emerson controversy (The Divinity School Address); Carlyle "spoke of the Address as the most remarkable utterance he had ever heard from that side of the water." And, he "spoke highly of (John Sullivan) Dwight's Translation (Select Minor Poems of Goethe and Schiller, 1839) who, he said, seemed to understand the matter better than anyone else." A little chipping, stamp of the Maine Genealogical Society. A Very Good copy.
