Item description from seller

Boston: Ticknor & Fields, 1856. Written by the American poet and editor James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) under a pseudonym. First published by in 1848, an intended dissent from the Mexican War. This is a Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copy of a Later Printing (Fourth Edition). Issued in the same binding as the First Edition, which Lowell had subsidized himself. Brown cloth, decoratively stamped on the covers, ruled on the spine, with titles in gilt. Clean text; xxix, 163 pages, indexed; with 12 pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. The text is exceptionally bright and fresh. The first twelve pages, prior to the Title, consist of a satirical "Notices of an Independent Press," including one entirely in Latin. Armorial bookplate of Henry Trowbridge Champney (b. 1825) on the front paste-down. Corners mildly bumped. Penciled date (1855) on the FFEP. A very solid copy. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Fourth Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.
