Few of us really know how Congress operates, what kind of men are in it, or what role it plays in democracy. Mr. Flynn, an expert on Washington affairs, presents Congress to us as it is, with all its faults and virtues. He takes us on a tour of the legislative branch of our government, guiding us to points of interest and pointing out little-known facts. Here are some of the salient topics he covers. How familiar are they to you? How much it costs to run Congress, Duties of the party Whip, Seniority rule, How congressmen live, Privileges of senators and representatives, The power of the purse, Ratification of treaties, What a caucus does, How the filibuster works, The lobby at work, Majority rule and minority rights, Congressional investigations. All these points and many others are illustrated with anecdotes taken from our history. The book abounds in graphic detail. We are escorted from Union Station direct to the Capitol building itself. We watch a congressman go about his daily duties: handling his correspondence, sitting on committees, and guiding his bills through the legislative mill. Every important congressional procedure is explained simply and straightforwardly. Mr. Flynn has lifted the dome off the Capitol and shown us the inner workings of Congress. Eminently readable and filled with fascinating information, his book presents a completely non-partisan view of the fortress of our freedom.…
