The Complete Medical Safety Reference for Rope Practice
Every wrap of rope places mechanical load on tissue that carries blood, conducts nerve signals, and depends on circulation to remain healthy. Most practitioners discover this not through education but through experience, a hand that went numb, a color change that was missed, a session that ended with symptoms that took days to resolve. This guide exists to replace that learning curve with knowledge.
The Medicine of Tying Guide is the only rope practice reference that moves through a session the way a session actually unfolds, covering what to assess before the first rope is placed, what to monitor while it is in place, and how to respond when a warning sign appears.
What this guide covers:
- The complete anatomy of every rope risk zone, from the radial nerve at the spiral groove of the humerus to the common peroneal nerve at the fibular head, with woodcut illustrations showing exactly where each structure lies and why rope compresses it
- A pre-session health screening framework covering cardiovascular, neurological, musculoskeletal, respiratory, metabolic, and psychological risk factors, with specific questions for each category and clear guidance on what each disclosure means for session planning
- Nerve function monitoring using bilateral sensory and motor testing routines designed to be performed at the rope in under ninety seconds, including the specific nerve territories to test for every upper and lower body configuration covered in the book
- Circulatory monitoring using skin color, temperature, and capillary refill assessment with tiered action thresholds at every stage, from routine repositioning through immediate untying to emergency medical response
- A complete medical conditions reference covering more than twenty-eight conditions organized by the specific action they require, including cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, hypermobility syndrome, Raynaud's syndrome, chronic pain, pregnancy, peripheral neuropathy, POTS, and more
- Emergency response protocols for suspected nerve injury, circulatory compromise, positional asphyxia, seizure response, and loss of consciousness, written to be consulted under pressure rather than studied in advance
- The complete first session walkthrough from pre-session conversation through warm-up, tying, monitoring, untying, aftercare, and post-session debrief, with every step grounded in the clinical framework the preceding chapters establish
- An integrated reference library including an anatomical nerve map, a compression zone index, a medical terminology glossary, and a rope community vocabulary glossary bridging both worlds in one place
Who this guide is written for:
This guide is written for the practitioner who takes the physical safety of their rope practice seriously and wants the clinical knowledge to match that commitment. It assumes no prior medical training. Every term is defined where it first appears and gathered again in the glossary. The monitoring framework it introduces is designed to convert clinical knowledge into real-time decisions at the rope rather than facts retained for a test that never comes.
This is not a book about how to tie. It is a book about what tying does to a body, and what a rigger who carries this knowledge can do that one who does not cannot.
The safest hands are the most informed ones.
