Octavo. 365 (3)pp. Contemporary calf with gilt ruling and lettering on spine. Update on causes, forms, and symptoms of diseases of the mind by one of the founding fathers of the United States. Benjamin Rush, one of the leaders of the American Enlightenment, signed the Declaration of Independence and served as Surgeon General in the Continental army; later became a professor of chemistry, medical theory and clinical practice at the University of Pennsylvania. An account covering the full range of known mental illnesses of the time in an attempt to place them ". under the direction of new principles, and that new inferences of a particular nature are deduced from them" (Author). Binding with water stains and wear along edges, some scuffing, corners bumped and spine with creasing. Starting at front cover hinge. Two stamps of previous owners and one handwritten dedication on inside cover; name handwritten to top of title page. Front endpaper missing. Heavily foxed with water stains throughout.
