The Measure of Men
A painter searching for beauty.
A poet searching for truth.
A weary old mercenary searching for... well, perhaps nothing at all.
When Luca Bellori, Matteo Aldobrini and Captain Ruggiero set out across the Twelve Republics, they expect to discover the secret of a better world. Each republic has devoted itself to a single great virtue—honour, generosity, beauty, peace, knowledge, justice, freedom, compassion and more—believing it has found the perfect way to live.
Yet every city hides the same surprising flaw.
Honour without mercy becomes cruelty.
Beauty without acceptance becomes obsession.
Freedom without responsibility becomes selfishness.
Compassion without balance becomes sacrifice.
With every road travelled and every lesson learned, the three companions begin to realise that no single virtue can measure the worth of a human life.
Warm, witty and quietly profound, The Measure of Men is a philosophical fantasy filled with memorable characters, gentle humour, thoughtful conversations and timeless wisdom. Inspired by the spirit of Renaissance storytelling, it is a celebration of curiosity, friendship and the imperfect art of living well.
Sometimes the greatest lesson is discovering that the best life isn't built upon one virtue alone... but knowing which one is needed today.
