Item description from seller

iBook #5 (of what would eventually become a series of 7) by this Scottish author (1895-1994) living in Newfoundland. The series features Maxie, a young girl who is sent to live with a series of uncles in faraway places after her own parents go missing in a shipwreck off the coast of Australia. Her "tremendously thrilling adventures & stirring deeds" gained her a loyal following among young readers in the early 20th century. In 205 pages + 7 pages of ads for other girls' series in rear, with glossy frontispiece & DJ cover art by Russell Tandy, who would become more famous for his illustrations in the Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys series. A slightly later printing of this 1936 FIRST EDITION from Cupples & Leon (listing only to self in front matter but to next book in rear & on front DJ flap), this 12mo has dark blue cloth over boards stamped in dark blue lettering & design (Maxie holding her hat) to front & spine. Condition is VG-/Good+: very clean & bright, binding strong & straight, both hinges secure. Pages modestly tanned, heavier around edges, but unmarked. Ffep (with the This is My Book" box) has been completely torn out. on ffep. Very mild rubbing to extremities, small white stain to bottom edge of front cover, & slight corner bumping. The unclipped original DJ is Fair, with a heavily creased triangular tear to upper front cover, lesser creasing & light chipping & rubbing all around; nicely protected in clear mylar cover free SPECIAL: buy any 2 books in this series at the same time & take 15% off, 3 or more, 20% off, with only $1.00 extra postage for each additional book!
