About this Item
I've used 1895 as the date of publication based on an inscription on the first front end paper. The inscription is interesting. It reads 'Presented to (illegible name) for having made every attendance during the year 1895, Burton Bradstock C.E. School.' That would be Church Of England. The school is in Dorset. I don't see a date in the book. It was likely published somewhere between 1892 and 1895. As you can see from the photographs, the covers have held up quite well. There's very little by way of soiling. The gilt lettering on both the front cover and the spine is quite bright. Same for the design. The corners and edges are in very good condition, little to no rubbing. The spine ends have a little bit of creasing. The spine is slightly slanted forward. The inside covers and end papers are a white and tan design. There are thin spaces with webbing showing at the junctures of both inside covers and their end papers. The front cover has a little bit of give, however both covers are securely bound. There are a handful of instances within the book of thin spaces at the gutter between facing pages, but there are no instances of any loose pages. There are four listed illustrations, one being the frontispiece. I've counted and accounted for all four. They are full-page black-and-white illustrations and they are all in very good condition. That goes for the pages within the book as well. They are quite clean, with only very occasional small instances of light soiling. There's some light foxing on the blank first verso of the front end paper and on the half-title page and its blank verso, but that's it for foxing until you reach the blank verso of the rear end paper. There are two pages of text that are almost entirely shaded tan, clearly a result of some kind of paper being left between them. I saw only a couple of light creases. There aren't any markings in the book. There aren't any attachments. And with the exception of the aforementioned inscription, there isn't any writing in the book. There are 238 pages. The last page is followed by 16 pages of 'National Society's Books For Prizes & Rewards'.That's a pretty comprehensive description of the condition of the book. 'Christabel Rose Coleridge (1843 ? 1921) was an English novelist who also edited girls' magazines, sometimes in collaboration with the writer Charlotte Yonge. Her views on the role of women in society were conservative. A grand-daughter of the poet, Samuel Coleridge, Christabel was born at St Mark's College, Chelsea while her father, Derwent, was headmaster there. For a time she helped her brother, Ernest, run a school, but her ambition was to be a writer. She went on to publish more than 15 novels; the first was a children's historical story called Lady Betty (1869). Minstrel Dick (1896) is set mainly in the 14th-century Berkhamstead court of the dying Edward, the Black Prince. Her fiction expressed her concern with morality, and several of her books were published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. In 1880, Christabel moved to Torquay, when her father retired there. Christabel had conservative ideas about the role of women in society, and she published a collection of essays on the subject: The Daughters Who Have not Revolted (1894). Her last novel, Miss Lucy, a character study, was published in 1908. Seller Inventory # 001871
