This text is aimed at mathematics students who are going to be elementary teachers, and so it aims to present mathematics in a format that prepares them to teach to the elementary school audience. This edition makes extensive use of models and diagrams, to try and develop students' conceptual understanding in order that they can connect and understand ideas, whilst at the same time giving them useful methods and models for teaching mathematics to elementary school children. There are investigations at the end of every chapter.
From the Publisher:
Models and diagrams are used extensively throughout the text to provide an extremely visual framework to help illustrate concepts.
Each section of the book contains a one-page activity which can be used for small group instruction, homework assignments, and ideas for projects or papers involving the design of an elementary school activity.
Each section begins with a Problem Opener relating to the topic at hand. These can be used for small group problem solving, as well as for classroom discussions.
Investigations-Computer, Calculator, or Laboratory - are located on the website. These sections pose questions which require collecting data; looking for patterns, and forming or verifying conjectures.
The text now includes algebraic concepts in Chapters 1 and 2, and the separate chapter on algebra has been eliminated.
The development of a website has led to a reduction in the length of the text. Portions of bibliographical references have been moved from the text to the website along with calculator and computer investigations. References to the location of these items may be found in the text (for example, see p. 135 and p. 204). A brief bibliography can still be found within the text (see pp. 789-793).
