1906 and 1907, Volume I and II of a five volume set, folio (13 1/2 x 19 1/2 in - 34.2 x 49.5 cm), silk covered boards with a woodblock illustration on the front board, edges beveled, spine covered in decorated silk cloth, purple silk ties, title in English in gilt on front board, top and bottom page edges in gilt, text in English. A total of 73 plates of which 63 are color woodblocks. Each plate is preceded by a tissue guard with information in English regarding the plate that follows. There are numerous black and white text illustrations in the text pages. While most are woodcuts, a few are collotypes. Issued with a straw textured folding case with ivory type clasps. According to Shimbi Shoin catalogues "Regular" and "Special" editions were issued in a total quantity of 600 sets. Each volume in a set contains a numbered limitation (these are 22 of 600) statement indicating the number of the set out of 600 sets. Volume I. 40 plates (32 color woodblock and 8 black and white collotype), 40 text pages (preface - v-viii and numbered pages 1-36). Volume I deals with the "Genre Before and About the Keicho and the Kwanyei Parts," Matabei Iwasa and the Hishikawa School. The following schools and artists are discussed and their art reproduced: Kano School, Tosa School, Hideyori Kano, Naisen Kano, Mata Iwasa, Moronobu Hishikawa, Morofusa Hishikawa, Moroshige Hishikawa, Morohira Hishikawa, Wawo Hishikawa, Tomofusa Hishikawa, Morotsugi Furuyama and Moromasa Furuyama. Volume II. 33 plates (31 color woodblock and 2 black and white collotype), 38 text pages (pages 37-74). Volume II deals with the Miyagawa School and the Kasukawa School. The following schools and artists are discussed and their art reproduced: Choshun Miyagawa, Shunsui Katsu-Miyagawa, Choki Miyagawa; Masayuki Miyagawa, Issho Miyagawa,Shinsui Katsukawa, Shunsho Katsukawa, Shuncho Katsukawa, Shunye Katsukawa, Shunko Katsukawa, Shundo Katsukawa, Shunkaku, Shunjo, Shunkyo, Shunko, Shunrin, Shunkyoku, Shunsen, Shungyo, Kyokko Katsukawa, Shuntei Katsukawa, Shunsen Katsukawa, Shunzan Katsukawa, Shuntoku and Shundo Katsukawa. ~ Condition. Both volumes (Vol I & II) are in Very Good condition. Folding cases for both volumes are present and also in Very Condition with clasps present and no tears and only minor separation at the seams. There is foxing to both volumes. The foxing in Volume I is light while in volume II it is heavier and I could call it medium. The foxing is primarily to the non-plate pages (including the tissue guards). Foxing on the plates is generally in the margin and back and only occasionally in the image area of the plate. Both volumes have all plates and text pages. Volume II is missing the Listing of Plates and a 8 x 10 copy of the listing is included.
