IN genius they are akin. Milton wrote his Epic in verses that will never die; Michelangelo wrought out his, in immortal works.
Both deal in colossal figures, and in grandeur of conception they are one. Had they changed places and epochs, Milton would have been, as the great artist was, a defender of liberty and a mighty prophet of judgment. Michelangelo would have A/ celebrated Cromwell and his Ironsides in Art, with the vigor of a Puritan, and would have given immortality to the Regi cides in imperishable marble.
Milton's Il Penseroso is matched by some of the more som ber sonnets of Michelangelo, and both have interpreted to men the deeper things of God. Milton, in his blindness, drew light for the world from the inner revelation of Divine Truth, and Michelangelo, in his isolation from men, communed with the Infinite.
