Paperback. The ESP32 just changed. Espressif's newest chips, the ESP32-C3, ESP32-C6, and ESP32-H2, are no longer built on the same closed architecture that powered the original ESP32. They now run on RISC-V, an open standard reshaping the entire semiconductor industry. If you're still learning this platform from tutorials written for the old Xtensa chips, you're already behind. This book is built for where the platform is now, not where it used to be.This is not another beginner's guide that stops at blinking an LED. It's a complete, professional-grade course in building real embedded products on the ESP32 RISC-V family, written by a senior embedded systems engineer with over a decade of experience shipping firmware that had to work correctly the first time, in the field, with no room for guesswork.Who this book is forIf you're a software developer moving into embedded systems for the first time, this book bridges that gap directly, explaining exactly where embedded thinking diverges from application programming and why. If you're a hobbyist who has outgrown beginner tutorials and wants to understand what separates a weekend project from a product that can survive months of unattended operation, this book takes you there. And if you're a student or early-career engineer who wants to connect classroom theory to real, working hardware, you'll find that connection on every page. The only prerequisite is a working knowledge of C. Everything else, RISC-V architecture, FreeRTOS, wireless protocols, security, is built from the ground up.What's insideAcross twelve chapters, you'll go from understanding how a RISC-V core actually executes your code to building complete, production-style firmware. You'll master GPIO, interrupts, UART, SPI, I2C, ADC, and PWM. You'll learn FreeRTOS the right way, tasks, queues, semaphores, and timers, so your applications scale without falling apart under real-world conditions. You'll connect your device to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, MQTT, and ESP-NOW. You'll implement secure boot, flash encryption, TLS, and over-the-air updates, the exact mechanisms that protect commercial products in the field. And you'll close the book with three complete, end-to-end projects, a sensor monitoring system, a smart home device, and a remote environmental data logger, plus the testing, version control, and CI practices that keep a real codebase maintainable for years, not just for a demo.Every chapter pairs theory with complete, working ESP-IDF code, not fragments you have to guess how to finish. Every example includes the error handling, memory discipline, and debugging insight that professional firmware actually requires, the details most tutorials skip entirely. What you'll learn: RISC-V architecture and how it differs from the older Xtensa-based ESP32 chipsGPIO, interrupts, UART, SPI, I2C, ADC, PWM, and hardware timersFreeRTOS tasks, queues, semaphores, event groups, and software timersHeap and stack management, NVS storage, and file systems (SPIFFS and FATFS)Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, HTTP clients and serversBluetooth Low Energy, MQTT, and ESP-NOWSecure boot, flash encryption, TLS, and over-the-air firmware updatesDebugging with JTAG and OpenOCD, plus performance and power optimizationThree complete, real-world projects built from start to finishProfessional practices: testing, version control, and continuous integrationWhy it matters nowRISC-V isn't a trend. What you'll learn:
- RISC-V architecture and how it differs from the older Xtensa-based ESP32 chips
- GPIO, interrupts, UART, SPI, I2C, ADC, PWM, and hardware timers
- FreeRTOS tasks, queues, semaphores, event groups, and software timers
- Heap and stack management, NVS storage, and file systems (SPIFFS and FATFS)
- Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, HTTP clients and servers
- Bluetooth Low Energy, MQTT, and ESP-NOW
- Secure boot, flash encryption, TLS, and over-the-air firmware updates
- Debugging with JTAG and OpenOCD, plus performance and power optimization
- Three complete, real-world projects built from start to finish
- Professional practices: testing, version control, and continuous integration
Why it matters now
RISC-V isn't a trend. It's the direction the entire embedded industry is heading, and the engineers who understand it deeply today will be the ones building tomorrow's connected products. Whether you're changing careers, leveling up a hobby, or shipping your first commercial device, this book gives you the depth, the code, and the engineering judgment to do it right.
Start building like a professional.
