It begins by tracing the development of masonry construction, exploring its roots in ancient civilizations and its evolution through the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The author then examines various cementing materials, including lime, hydraulic lime, Portland cement, and others, delving into their properties and applications. The book provides practical insights into concrete and reinforced concrete, exploring their composition, design principles, and uses in a wide range of structures, from bridges to buildings. Through detailed explanations and illustrative examples, the author unravels the complexities of masonry design, guiding readers through the intricacies of compressive and tensile forces, shear, and bending moments. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. The term Masonry has been construed to include concrete, and the field covered by the title is a very wide one. It has therefore been necessary to select for discussion those types which seem most adequately to illustrate the principles, and no attempt has been made to cover fully the details of all classes of masonry structures. The purpose has been to provide an introduction to the subject, which may later be followed by intensive study in more detailed works upon the various branches. This gives a general view of the subject as a whole, and is the natural method of approach.
The Author has derived much assistance from a number of books which deal more fully with various portions of the subject. These are mentioned at the ends of articles or chapters to which they specially relate. They should be studied by students desiring a more complete presentation of the subject.
Special acknowledgment is also due to Professors A. Lincoln Hyde and Guy D. Newton of the University of Missouri for reading and criticising portions of the manuscript and for assistance in pre paring the illustrations.
