Peach printed cloth over paper, binding fragile, 1 inch chip top of spine, 4 3/4 x 7 1/4 inches, former owner's name and address on ffep (Rome, NY), frontispiece of a statue of a minister preaching, another plate of Mary Jones in her old age, copied from a photograph, 61 clean pp. plus publisher's adverts. Text in Welsh. The story of Mary Jones (1784-1864), who, as a fifteen-year-old Welsh girl, at a time when Bibles in the Welsh language were scarce, walked twenty-six miles to by a copy from the Rev. Thomas Charles, who used her story to petition the Religious Tract Society to establish the British and Foreign Bible Society to supply Bibles to Wales. It is said that she purchased three copies, and two survive; one at the Cambridge University Library and the other at the National Library of Wales.This edition has a shortened title. It was originally published in 1879 as Mary Jones, y Gymraes fechan heb yr un Beibl : a sefydliad y Feibl-Gymdeithas (Mary Jones, the Welsh girl without a Bible : The organisation of the Bible Society).Reprinted during the days of the Welsh Revival conducted by Evan Roberts and associates.
