136, frontis, 108 text engravings. . HB. Vg in d/w (short tear to head of spine, in removable protective sleeve). Enclosed is a signed typescript letter from the author discussing the various sea bird colonies around Penzance (undated, circa 1956). Also with a small (105x126mm), unsigned watercolour drawing of a pair of redshanks (a little foxed) by an unknown artist. Illustrated with wood engravings by the author. Hilda M. Quick (1895-1978) trained at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London and specialised in wood engraving. She lived in Penzance and spent some time in Paris. She exhibited her work in London and Newlyn. This book which she wrote and illustrated, became a bestseller. In 1951 she moved to St Agnes, Isles of Scilly, where she spent the rest of her life.
