Paperback. The Marriage Was Over, But I stayed is a deeply personal memoir about love, loss, marriage, motherhood, endurance, grief and the long journey of finding oneself after years of living for others. It is the story of a Woman who entered marriage at a very young age because she believed marriage would give her the home, security, love, belonging, and stability she had longed for since childhood. Having lost both her parents as an infant and later losing the woman who raised her, he carried an emptiness that made the idea of having a husband and a permanent home especially attractive. But the marriage she entered was not the marriage she had imagined. What began as a search for security became a long journey through emotional distance, conflict, violence, betrayal, motherhood, loneliness, and devastating loss. Yet through it all, she stayed. She stayed because she had children. She stayed because she hoped things would change. She stayed because she was afraid of losing another family. She stayed because she believed marriage was something that had to be endured. And she stayed because she did not yet understand that a person can remain physically present in a marriage while emotionally losing the relationship they once hoped to build. This is the story of how she slowly came to understand that truth. A Childhood Shaped by Loss Long before marriage entered her life, the author experienced a loss that would influence many of the decisions she made later. She was an only child who lost both parents when she was only a baby. She grew up without the parents who would ordinarily have provided her with security, guidance, affection, and a sense of belonging. Fortunately, she was taken in by Annie, a woman who became her guardian and played an important role in raising and educating her. For the first time, she had someone she could call family. Annie gave her hope. She supported her education and provided the stability that every child needs. The author grew up knowing that, although she had lost her parents, she still had someone who cared about her. But that security did not last forever. Annie died just before the author sat for her O-Level examinations. Her death reopened the wound of abandonment and left the young girl facing life without the person he depended on most. After Annie's death, she moved between relatives' homes. She often felt like a burden and longed for a place she could call her own. That longing became an important part of her story. She did not simply want a husband. She wanted a home. She wanted someone who would choose her. She wanted to belong somewhere. She wanted the security she had lost when her parents died and the stability she had experienced with Annie. At a young age, she began to imagine that marriage could provide all of these things. She believed that becoming a wife could give her a permanent home and perhaps an opportunity to continue her education and build a better future. She did not realize hat the longing to belong could sometimes make it difficult to recognize whether the place one was entering was truly safe or loving. The Marriage That Looked Like an Answer The opportunity to marry came through her future mother-in-law, who was looking for a wife for her son, a young man working in the city. The author's name was mentioned, and she was sent for. When her future mother-in-law met her, she immediately liked her. She invited her and her cousin to her home, welcomed them warmly, gave them food, and made them feel comfortable. To the young author, this looked like the beginning of something beautiful.
A Childhood Shaped by Loss
Long before marriage entered her life, the author experienced a loss that would influence many of the decisions she made later.
The Marriage That Looked Like an Answer
The opportunity to marry came through her future mother-in-law, who was looking for a wife for her son, a young man working in the city.
The author's name was mentioned, and she was sent for.
When her future mother-in-law met her, she immediately liked her.
She invited her and her cousin to her home, welcomed them warmly, gave them food, and made them feel comfortable.
To the young author, this looked like the beginning of something beautiful.
She did not see marriage as a complicated relationship requiring emotional preparation and mutual choice.
