Print on Demand. This book introduces Kate Sturgis, a young woman who has invited her cousins to a summer retreat in her quaint, lakeside home following a season in Washington. The story is set some time before the present day, in the era of horse and carriage. Kate has created a vision of summer bliss where they can embrace the freedom of nature, far from the demands of society, and reconnect as they did during their carefree childhoods. To Kate and her cousins’ dismay, the arrival of two young men from the city threatens their plans for a tranquil summer. The once familiar landscape is subtly altered as the young women confront their expectations of themselves and each other. The author explores the nuances of female relationships, the challenges of balancing societal norms with personal desire, and the unforeseen impact newcomers can have on a close-knit group. Ultimately, this book provides a thought-provoking exploration of the complexities of friendship, identity, and the pursuit of happiness. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

At the last words the dog's mien changed from the sudden self-abasement; he arose proudly, and, with a mute appeal for pardon, resumed his position in the bow with grave dignity.
A few minutes later the boat reached shore, and, springing lightly out, Kate extended her hand to the dusky figure waiting to deliver a package of letters.
