Item description from seller

A very scarce seventeenth-century copy of this work on equestrian care from Gervase Markham. Illustrated with two full-page illustrations, decorative head-and-tail pieces, and two marginal diagrams. Seventh edition, according to Copac. Unfortunately, this work is incomplete, missing the title page and eight preliminary pages, the three folding engraved plates, and the final pages (543-591) of the text. An important work, it would command perhaps ?,000 complete. Gervase (or Jervis) Markham (ca. 1568 ? 3 February 1637) was an English poet and writer. He was acquainted with Latin and several modern languages, and had an exhaustive practical acquaintance with the arts of forestry and agriculture. He was a noted horse-breeder, and is said to have imported the first Arabian horse. Rebacked in calf with original boards preserved. Externally, quite smart, though with a little bumping and some slight wear to the original leather. Internally, generally firmly bound although front hinge is strained. One plate is close-cropped. Pages have some slight age-toning, and odd ink marks and patches of foxing. Very Good.…
