Print on Demand. This book delves into ancient Hindu mythology and philosophy, offering a fascinating journey through tales and teachings. Divided into distinct sections, it first explores intriguing questions arising from the epic Mahabharata, providing insightful explanations through the voices of wise birds. The narrative then shifts to explore profound themes of life, death, and the consequences of action, drawing upon the wisdom of a learned Brahman. Creation myths and the fascinating lineage of Manus, mythical progenitors of humankind, are intricately woven into the fabric of the text. One section stands out as a powerful poem in its own right, glorifying the goddess Durga in her fierce aspect and highlighting the complex and sometimes contradictory nature of devotion. Throughout, the author skillfully blends narrative with philosophical discourse, offering a window into the evolution of religious and social thought in ancient India. Ultimately, this book illuminates the enduring quest for meaning and liberation that lies at the heart of Hindu tradition. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

This translation of the Markandeya Purina being made for the Asiatic Society of Bengal naturally follows the edition of this work prepared by the Rev. Dr. K. M. Banerjea, and published in the Biblio theca Indica in 1862; yet other editions and some mss. Have been consulted and are referred to. The translation has been kept as close to the original as possible, consistently with English sense and idiom for a translation loses some of its interest and much of its trust worthiness, when the reader can never know whether it reproduces the original accurately or only the purport of the original. The time during which the work has been in hand has rendered it difficult to maintain one system of transliteration throughout but, in order to place the whole in a consistent state, the system established by the Royal Asiatic Society and approved by the Asiatic Society of Bengal has been adopted in the Index and in this Introduction.
